The Primal Vow · 第十八願
The 18th Vow of Amitabha Buddha
"If, when I attain Buddhahood, sentient beings throughout the ten directions who sincerely entrust themselves to me, aspire to be born in my land, and recite my name even ten times should fail to be born there — may I not attain perfect enlightenment.
"
— Infinite Life Sutra, Vow XVIII
至心
Sincerity
The vow asks only for a sincere, wholehearted turning toward Amitabha — not perfection of conduct, not mastery of meditation, but genuine aspiration.
信樂
Faith
To entrust oneself is to believe without reservation that the vow is real, that the Pure Land exists, and that birth there is truly possible for oneself.
欲生
Aspiration
The wish to be born in Sukhavati is the seed of liberation. Even reciting the name ten times with this aspiration is enough — such is the scope of the vow.
Among Amitabha's 48 vows, the 18th — known as the Primal Vow — is considered the very foundation of Pure Land Buddhism. Master Shandao taught that the entire tradition stands or falls on this single promise: that Amitabha's compassion reaches every sentient being without exception, and that the name 南無阿彌陀佛 carries within it the full power of that vow.

Highest Grade of Rebirth

Lowest Grade of Rebirth
下輩生觀
Contemplate the lowest grade of rebirth, for those who have committed heavy karma but call upon Amitabha at death.
In many modern Pure Land traditions, especially Jodo Shinshu, emphasis is placed more on reciting the Nembutsu (Namu Amida Butsu) with faith and gratitude than on mastering all sixteen visualizations. However, the visualizations remain an important and influential Pure Land teaching, offering a structured path for those who seek to cultivate the mind through contemplative imagery.
Mandala Gallery
Each mandala is a living map of the cosmos — a sacred projection of light and geometry through which the mind may enter stillness and the heart may open toward the Pure Land.
阿彌陀佛
Amitabha Mandala
The boundless light of Amitabha radiates outward in infinite rings, representing the immeasurable compassion that reaches all sentient beings without exception.
蓮花
Lotus of Purity
The lotus rises unsullied from muddy waters — a symbol of the aspirant who, while dwelling in the world of samsara, keeps their heart turned toward the Pure Land.
法輪
Dharma Wheel
Amitabha's 48 vows turn the Wheel of Dharma continuously in Sukhavati. The eight spokes represent the Noble Eightfold Path perfected in the realm of bliss.
極樂世界
Sukhavati Mandala
The Pure Land itself visualized as sacred geometry — concentric realms of jeweled trees, rivers of merit-water, and lotus flowers bearing the reborn.
本願
Star of Vows
The 18th Vow — sincere recitation of the nembutsu assures rebirth in the Pure Land. This star mandala embodies the convergence of Amitabha's compassion and the devotee's aspiration.
A School of
Perfect Character
Sukhavati is not merely a destination of leisure, but the ultimate academy of spiritual refinement. It is a realm crafted entirely from merit, free from suffering and obscuration.
Here, the environment itself teaches. The jeweled trees, the rivers of eight-merit water, and the very birdsong continuously proclaim the Dharma, guiding all beings toward awakening.
"In the Pure Land there are no evil paths, no suffering, no obstacles to practice. All beings there receive the perfect conditions to grow in wisdom and compassion until full enlightenment is attained." — Infinite Life Sutra

Monthly Theme · June
The Light of Amitabha
This month we contemplate the symbolism of light in Pure Land Buddhism. Amitabha means 'Infinite Light,' and his light is said to reach every corner of the cosmos. The light is not just physical illumination — it is the light of wisdom, of compassion, of the Dharma itself.

Founder of Jodo Shinshu · 1173–1262
Shinran is the most influential figure in Japanese Pure Land Buddhism. He taught that the Nembutsu is the expression of Amitabha's vow already received, and that other-power is the true path to liberation.
“When I deeply entrust myself to the Primal Vow, I am not concerned with my own virtues or my own sins. I simply trust in the vow of Amitabha.”
